MOZAMBIQUE AND MALAWI – AN APPEAL
Who of us can fail to have been shocked at the utter devastation caused by Cyclone Idai in Malawi and Mozambique, particularly Beira. The magnitude of this disaster is brought home to us even more when we are mindful of three of our mission personnel who serve there. On Friday 15 March, Jane Edwards was due to fly to Beira from Johannesburg but as her flight was cancelled given the extreme weather, she flew to Maputo, where she is staying with colleagues. She has been advised that her house in Beira is uninhabitable. Dennis and Sheila Eaton, who are planning to return to Malawi at the end of next month, have been in daily contact with their colleagues, Syford and Elizabeth. The rains and excessive winds have left hundreds of people displaced and in desperate situations.
As a church family, we feel the need to respond to the current needs of those so severely affected by this disaster. For example, Jane may well have lost all her belongings, including her car. Opportunity is therefore being made for us to give to this appeal this coming Sunday in all our services. If you are not with us this weekend and would still like to give then please put your donation in an envelope marked Africa Appeal and place it in the offering bag over the course of the next two weeks. Those who would like to give directly by bank transfer should use ‘Africa Appeal’ as the reference. This is obviously a developing situation and we are currently liaising with BMS [Jane’s mission agency] and Dennis and Sheila as to how the money can be used most effectively.
