An update from Joy

June 9th, 2020 by Laura Wood

The aim of Lansdowne International Cafe is to create a space, a community for families, professionals, undergraduate and postgraduate students, language students, and refugees from all over the world to come together and create friendships and fellowship with one another.

The purpose of the cafe is to get the Gospel across to many people from different cultural backgrounds in one place! We meet every Friday evening at naked coffee where we come together to listen to a Bible story and explore life’s questions through the Bible.

Not all who attend are Christian’s but they are always willing to explore and hear what the Gospel has to say. As well as exploring the Bible, the international cafe meetings provide a time to meet other international students and workers; a time to practice conversational English, and also learn about other cultural backgrounds.

We have a great group of team members who meet before the cafe meetings to spend time in prayer for those who attend. However, we are still looking for more people to join our team and serve the cafe with us! Maybe this is something you might consider getting involved in. After all, we are all called to go out and make disciples of all nations. We are so blessed as we have people from many nations in the UK to reach out to! If you would like to join our team, then please do get into contact with our wonderful international worker Ngaira Smith!

In the meantime please do remember the work of the International Cafe in your prayers. During these unprecedented times we have taken the international cafe meetings onto zoom, so please continue to pray that people will be still willing to join our online meetings. Please pray for Ngaira as she continues to lead this ministry, pray that she may have a sense of direction on what the next steps for the cafe are.

Lastly, please keep in your prayers the international students who have not been able to travel back to their home countries due to government restrictions. I have really enjoyed my time serving the international cafe over the past two years. I have learned so much about other cultures, met a lot of wonderful people, and worked with a great team. I really enjoyed sharing and narrating Bible stories during the meetings, it is definitely a useful skill that I have developed. My time at the cafe has pushed me out of my comfort zone, made me experience new things, develop new skills, and has taught me more about God’s heart for all nations. I will really miss the international cafe and the church!

So to my Lansdowne church family, I want to say thank you for having me and giving me opportunities to serve the church, it has been such a pleasure serving you all!

I will be living back at home with my parents for a year before I get married in July 2021. I’m not sure what my exact plans will be for the year. However, during my block placement earlier this year I was involved in some prison work and I really loved it! I hope to get involved in this area of ministry more after I graduate and see where it takes me!
Prayer requests: God gives me a clear direction on the next steps for the future. And adapting to life after Moorlands!

Thank you
