“Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts.”
Hebrews 3: 7-8a
One of the great joys of Christian faith is to live with the awareness that God speaks, that His voice is active, that His Word is powerful. And that every day is an opportunity to hear and respond to Him.
It is towards that basic reality that our motto for 2018 points us. We always live within hearing distance of God’s prompts and prods. The problem often is that we tune into the wrong frequency, download voices other than His and spend weeks as a result going nowhere fast!
Though taken from the letter to the Hebrews, this verse is a commentary on the narrative of the book of Exodus. And that’s where we are going to camp for one of our major teaching series this year. We are calling it the Journey.
Exodus is the story of a journey, a mass departure from slavery to The Promised Land via a wilderness of difficulty and doubt. During that circuitous journey, faith is tested and an entire generation misses out on the blessing of God.
Like many journeys we undertake in life, the people of God had been told the destination, but impatience quickly sets in. And with the insistence of a child in the back of a car, after five minutes of travel, they are asking “are we there yet?”
In this long season as a Church family, which began several years ago, and which we called ” Lansdowne Without Walls”, many is the time I have heard the equivalent “are we there yet?” said.
So, this year’s motto is a reminder to us: keep walking, trusting, listening. If the journey is challenging, soften your heart to God. Dial down the volume of distracting noises and fears. Listen up. He speaks. We step out. The God who has brought us out, will bring us in.
